What does a bench press train?
It basically depends on the type of bench you are going to buy:
Flat bench: The pectoralis major and triceps are the protagonists, with the anterior deltoids taking a back seat.
Adjustable bench: By tilting the backrest and seat, you can target different areas of the chest, work on the lats, shoulders and core, or use the declination to train the abs and lower chest.
Special bench: Integrated structure specifically for training a particular type of muscle.
Why and when to use it
The bench press is a raised support system designed for strength and hypertrophy exercises, especially for the upper body. Many athletes schedule it once or twice a week, adjusting frequency and intensity based on their goals and preparation.
To complete your workout, you'll need additional equipment: an Olympic barbell, bumper or split plates, fixed or adjustable dumbbells, and possibly a multi-power bench. These tools expand the variety of movements (incline flyes, shoulder presses, floor presses, hip thrusts, etc.) and allow you to fully utilize the bench you choose.
How to choose your bench
- Define the primary use : Powerlifting? Bodybuilding? General training?
- Consider the space : Fixed, adjustable, or foldable? Do you need wheels to move it?
- Check the load capacity : Heavy loads require heavy-duty frame and high-density foam.
- Think about the accessories : Sit-up option, foot rolls, integrated storage, rack attachments or combo racks.
